Faced with rich fire department expectations, an excruciatingly small city budget, and the important context of the Caltech campus, Fire Station 34 is a modest plaster and stud building, with trim highlights in redwood and zinc.

The building profiles reflect the vertically-tapering Maya influences of the campus' classic classroom buildings.

The interiors are raw, with exposed structure and mechanical ducting.  The firefighters benefit from such amenities as corner-glazed study lounges and balconies.
